If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be working from my laptop, earning a full-time income, and still making it to every school pickup, I probably would have laughed. But here I am—running a multi-stream business from home (and sometimes the beach), all while raising my little one and living a life I used to dream about.

This is the freelancer lifestyle. And it’s not a myth, a Pinterest fantasy, or something reserved for influencers. It’s real. And if you’re a mum who wants more freedom, it’s absolutely possible for you too.

What My Workweek Looks Like

No two weeks look the same, but here’s the rhythm I’ve built:

  • Monday & Tuesday are my content and client work days. I focus on designing websites, creating social media content, or reviewing strategies for my OBM clients.
  • Wednesday is my light admin and catch-up day—perfect for batching Pinterest content or reviewing blog SEO.
  • Thursday is client call day and strategy deep-dives.
  • Friday? That’s flexible. Sometimes I rest, sometimes I catch up on emails. Sometimes, I take the whole day off.

I plan my business around my life—not the other way around. I work around nap times, school hours, and mum life. And the best part? I never have to ask for time off.

The Real Benefits of Being Your Own Boss

Being self-employed as a freelancer offers more than flexible hours. It gives you the freedom to choose how you earn, who you work with, and where you work from.

I earn income through web design, social media management, coaching, crypto mining, and now even travel partnerships. But none of that started overnight. I started small and built one stream at a time.

What freelancing gives me most is freedom:

  • Freedom to be a present mum
  • Freedom to earn what I’m worth
  • Freedom to pivot when something doesn’t feel aligned

And freedom to build something that reflects me.

You Can Start With Limited Time and Tech Skills

When people hear I manage multiple services and clients, they assume I must be a tech genius. Spoiler: I’m not. I learned as I went. Most freelancers do.

There are so many user-friendly platforms now—from Canva for graphic design, to Showit or Squarespace for web design, and Flodesk for email marketing.

You don’t need to know it all to begin. You just need to start with what you have, learn as you go, and stay consistent. My first offer was basic social media management. That one service helped me learn about content, analytics, and client communication. Over time, I added new skills, raised my rates, and built a business I’m proud of.
